Convicted fraudster returns N550,000 to blind victim

A 33-year-old security guard, Gift Onyegam, currently serving a 10-year jail term for defrauding a blind female teacher in Enugu, yesterday refunded N550,000, being part of the N830,000 she lost to him.
The refund of the money was sequel to the judgment of a Federal High Court, Enugu, presided over by Justice M. Shuiabu, who ordered that the convict, apart from serving the 10 years jail term without option of fine, should repay the money duped the blind woman.

Gift was arrested in 2013 by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for Advanced Fee Fraud, after she duped the blind teacher, identified as Mrs. Rose Ihekanacho, of N830,000 under the pretext of securing her son a job at Shell Petroleum Development Company and was, accordingly, convicted.
Presenting a First Bank draft of N550,000 made payable to the victim yesterday in Enugu, EFCC’s Head of Operations, South-East zone, Mr. David Iloyanomo, thanked his staff that carried out the investigation for their diligence and passion.
Elated Mrs. Ihekanacho, who was led to the EFCC office in Enugu by one of her sons, was full of praises for the commission, saying at a point she wanted to give up on the matter.
Prosecution counsel, Mainforce Ekwu, had moved an oral application before the court praying it to prevail on the convict to repay the money, citing Section 11 of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act, 2006.
