Mutiny: Military Bans Coverage Of Court Martial.
Spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Garrison Headquarters, Colonel Aliyu
Yusuf, told journalists at the venue of the trial that the decision is
in the interest of national security.
He explained that witnesses in the trial are to give testimonies
based on the ongoing operations in the north eastern part of the country
and in order to prevent a sabotage of the operations of troops in the
area, coverage will henceforth be suspended.
Before the ban on media coverage of the proceedings, a witness at the
trial, Captain Idris Salleh, corroborated the lead prosecution’s
testimony of how the soldiers refused to carry out the orders of their
commander to fight the Boko Haram insurgents.
According to Captain Salleh, the soldiers on trial told him that they did not want to die.
The 59 soldiers are standing trial for mutiny and refusal to fight the Boko Haram insurgents in the country.
Their trial is coming three weeks after 12 soldiers were sentenced to death for committing mutiny against a superior officer.
