Almajiri Scholars In Northern Nigeria Need Urgent Support.

The President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration has vowed to cooperate with the govermnents of Northern states while developing the Almajiri education in Nigeria. Despite the claims and multi-million naira budget allocations, reports coming from the North are far from positive.
Naij.com guest writer Esther Emedo reacts to the article published earlier on Naij.com which raises the problem of the abandonment of the almajiri scholars by the government.
“I am an ex-NYSC corper who served in Katsina State. I am writing in response to the article by Mr. Abdulbaqi Aliyu Jari  about the abandonment of the almajiri students in Nigeria,” Ms. Emedo writes to info@naij.com.
“The economic situtaion of the almajiri students is truly disheartening. Whenever I came across an almajiri scholar, I saw that life was unbearable for them. They are just littered over, sleeping on the streets, living from hand to mouth. Many of them are involved in illegal activities.
“It pains me to see that nobody cares about these young people. I’ve been desperately trying to reach out to the authorities and create a more suitable environment for the almajiri scholars.
“Unless we address the problem today, tomorrow we may have to face our youths as agents of mass destruction. It is up to us to bring up the young generation if we don’t want the situation to become harmful to us. These kids need to have an opportunity to receive at least some kind of vocational training, which would make them prone to the dangerous recruitment by the Boko Haram terrorist network.
“I would like to say that Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema of Katsina State has played a significant role in developing the state. Katsina now feels like a home away from home. I only wish for an opportunity to put the smiles on the faces of almajiri scholars, to make life easier for them.
“I would suggest to set up a vocational school, with sections for various types of sweing machinees, with a well-equipped clinic within school premises for emergency cases. Another section of the school could comprise some lecture rooms, an ICT rooms with desktop computers and projectors, and a library where the pupils could make research. There could also be a plot of land for them to practice agriculture, stock raising, fishing. A school bus could be acquired to make traveling to various locations possible. Thus, while attending this kind of establishment, the almajiri scholars will be fed, trained and kept off the streets. Moreover, upon graduation, these scholars will be able to stand on their own and start their own life.”
